In 1878 a Dutchman named Gerrit van Voornveld started to produce liquorice and peppermints at a steam factory in the Spuistraat district of Amsterdam.

Family De Vries started producing peppermint in 1902. In 1922 they thought it would be successful to start using a brand name for their peppermint, so they did and KING was born.
Cloetta is the second largest player in the total confectionary market as a result of strong positions in the segments of candy, liquorice, chewing gum and chocolate specialties.
The Netherlands is the sixth largest market in Western Europe, with just over 4 per cent of the region’s confectionery consumption. In 2015 the Dutch market for pastilles and chewing gum decreased for the second consecutive year while the market for sugar confectionery was on the same level as in the previous year.
